Tisha B'Av

17th of Tammuz, the three weeks and the 9th of Av

This project offers some programmes and ideas to enrich activities for student and adult populations. With a title from the book of Lamentations “For these things I weep…”, the aim of this project is to explore some of the history, themes and texts surrounding the period of mourning and commemoration leading up to the 9 th of Av, in history and in text, and to contemplate some of the dilemmas of commemorating Tisha Be Av in today's Israel and Jewish world.

Lesson Plan by Rabbi Joe Hample

It’s a challenge to teach children and families about Tish’ah b’Av. The holiday is a fast day, with no signature foods, and a solemn occasion, when singing and enjoyment should be minimized. The danger is that kids and families won’t learn about the holiday at all, if the lesson can’t be made palatable for young people. This project challenges this assumption, offering activities and lessons to make this day meaningful.

Rosh HaShanah

Three proposed lessons deal with the themes of birth, parenthood, and family in texts for Rosh Hashanah. This holiday casts light on family issues through various models, represented by stories that we read in synagogue. The issues that worry today’s parents are already present in the ancient sources, and they invite us to engage in a dialogue with them. Using various methods of working with a text—beit midrash, Bibliodrama, art midrash—the participants will be able to gain a profound understanding of the original work and to find its relevance, both for individual growth and for self-determination of family relations in the complicated reality of today’s world. A creative workshop also will enable participants to find in the text their own voice and personal interpretation.

Contemporary research tells us that both in established communities in the West where the phenomenon of the 3 days a year Jew is well known and in the newly reestablished communities of the East there are many Jewish adults, whose understanding and engagement with Rosh Hashanah doesn’t go much beyond dipping the apple in the honey and listening to the shofar. This unsophisticated understanding of Rosh Hashanah is all the more frustrating when we consider that on the whole these people are sophisticated and intelligent people who are quite capable of going beyond a childish understanding of Jewish tradition.

Yitzhak Rabin Memorial Day

A Jew had murdered the Prime Minister of the Jewish State. It was a moment that swept the country into turmoil. It is an issue that the State of Israel is still trying to grapple with and several big questions were opened: How does a nation heal it's wounds? What do we remember? To whom does memory belong? Although the commemoration of the murder of Yitzhak Rabin has entered the public domain in Israel, there is no agreement on format nor an accepted ritual or synagogue ceremony. There is even not agreement on whether to use the secular or Jewish date on which to commemorate the event. This project highlights and explores these and other issues and allows opportunity for the educator to engage the learners intellectually.
